The Guwhati High Court has banned the sale of all passenger vehicles up to 1,500 kg through an interim order on July 26, 2015. The ruling came into effect on August 6, 2015 with the Assam Transport Department sending a directive to all district transport officers. The ruling came in effect due to the Euro NCAP crash tests, which reflected the inability of these vehicles to meet safety emission norms.
This measure has slashed down the sales of automobiles in the North-Eastern region. The Gauhati High Court has “directed” the Central government “not to permit the auto manufacturers to release and sell the small 4-wheelers with a mass of up to 1,500 kilograms and quadricycles without putting them to crash and emission test”.
